Battle of the Outer Dimension

[History, War]

The Preparations

In 3320 and with the discovery of the Chroniode and the development of new technological capabilities driven by the projects of ChronoPower, Inc. The possibility was opened of opening portals that linked with the native dimension of Unification.

After refining the technology of the PSDs (Portal Stabilization Devices) previously used to manipulate the gateways opened by Unification during its assault of 3219, it was proved that by altering their field manipulators using Harlan's Chroniode, they were able to connect to the appropriate vibration level to open stable gateways leading to the Unification's dimension.

Once the mercenary clans obtained their modified PSD, the possibility of accessing the dimension from which the threat of Unification came was tempting. The advisory council of security composed by the great powers, along with senior representatives of all the clans concerned, adopted the decision to send reconnaissance missions that would gather the necessary intelligence with which to judge the situation better.

The first reports showed some empty planets, with little or no security and less military presence, and no enclave that maintained an advanced technological level. Some pilots found deposit spoils with some useful resources like alternative packages of Unification's stims, called renovations and their own Hatoraides. At the same time, clans collected samples by request of Alpha Corp, from the Shogunate, as for Cherry Blossom Mechworks, from the Sengakuji Reaches, that could be used to research and develop new enhancement modules for the Freon and Gigus class mechs, improvements that may be useful for the incoming assault to the Unification.

Although this was not determinant given the wide extension that any galaxy can possess, the fact of finding some abandoned facilities and ruined nucleus with marginal population, made think to many that perhaps Unification had undergone an important part of its armies in its sweeping assaults to our dimension.

This view was reinforced by the information that Raven, the allied agent who had been imprisoned by Unification, was able to filter into our battledimension with the help of a fragment of the Drochah Chroniode, which he secretly possessed since the defeat of the Forerunner. These reports emphasized the weakness of Unification, which had shifted from an aggressive attitude to a completely defensive after its repeated defeats.

Finally, the opinion that our forces should take the initiative gained strength, sending numerous reconnaissance missions in preparation for a massive assault on the alien dimension.

The Burning Skies Operation

The direction and planning of the operation "Burning Skies" was designed by General Nova, the Chroniode Research Oversight Committee and advisors from the Great Powers.

A daring plan was draw by General Nova, with two main targets and a secondary one:
  • Destruction of the Unification Generators that allowed to open the gateways to our dimension, to stop the Unification attacks.
  • Give a definitive strike to the Unification Army, able to weaken it time enough like to keep forward the initiative in case unification found a new way to make their travel into our dimension.
  • To rescue the several prisoners kept by Unification during their first campaigns against our world, and particularly, to free to the agent known as the Feeder of Ravens, who as well could assist the operations helping to identify the main targets.
To attempt these goals, Nova was proposing a planetary assault with the employ of the guerrilla tactics, forcing to a Unification weakened by their successive attempts against our dimension, to fragment their forces in their need to prevent any damage done on their Gateway Reactors, paying them their own medicine, as using the same tactics they employed during their invasion assaults against our dimension.

After gather the required Intel through blitz incursions in Unification dimension and after intensive training through the Squad Wars hosted by the Craftsmen, Hundreds of small swarms of mech squads entered the Unification dimension by employing Dr. Oki's PSDs perfected by the ChronoPower Inc. Technology, overflowing Unification forces in their attempt to defend their gateway generators, and losing this way, any possible supremacy they could have keep in their own domains.

All the objectives of the Mercenary Clan Squads were fulfilled to perfection: The prisoners were rescued and a great defeat was inflicted upon the Unification, which saw their forces decimated and their generators destroyed.

After the victorious operation, both the Great Powers and the mercenary clans were convinced that a long time would go by before they came back to hear about Unification.

Unification Consumable Resources

[Technology, Chemistry]

Exploring the mercenary clans in the Unification dimension enabled us to gather intelligence for the preparation of a large-scale assault, as well as finding some useful resources that included altered versions of our Hatoraides and Stim packs.

The singularity of the alien dimension from which Unification comes (the Fusion equivalent in that dimension) seems to have an analogous version for each of the characteristics and circumstances of our own dimension.

Continuing this premise, it seems that the chemical enhancers that our pilots employ, have their replica in the Unification's dimension.

Although chemists are not yet able to determine some of the chemical components of alien consumables, laboratory tests performed on Novum Dolorum, proved to be not harmful to our organism in the short term, as well as a stimulating function identical to ours Stims and Hatoraides, with absolute compatibility.

The found consumables were analyzed, showing that they were organically compatible with us in a total degree of tolerance that theoretically allowed the consumption of the maximum dose of our own Stims and Hatoraides and of a similar dose of the versions of the alien dimension. This virtually doubles the usability of these consumables without endangering the human organism.

Thus, a pilot who has hoarded a handful of these resources, could consume six large Hatoraides, six Hatoraides and the same amounth of Unification Hatoraides of similar type, totaling twelve large and twelve normal (with a total stimulation capable of allowing 18 additional combats). A pilot seeking an adrenal stimulation can also consume four Large Stim Packs and six Standard Stims, along with four Unification Large Revivers (the Unification version of Stim Pack) and six other standard Revivers providing 140 energetic units of further activity)

Shogunate Civil War

[War, History, Society]

Shogunate Flag (By GJ)
The Shogunate civil war took place in the year 3307 and exploded because of the weakening of the emperor, that dragged the Shogunate to the stagnation. This situation generated great discontent both between some of the army's staff generals and within the imperial family. The situation erupted with the uprising of General Fujiwara in rebellion on the one hand, and on the other, that of the Imperial Princes, the Iron Prince and the Prince of Flowers, who rose up as pretenders to become more capable successors of the aging Emperor. As later was discovered, the Gorax manipulations displayed a big paper in all the happenings.

The civil war ended with a partial victory of the Gorax plans, and the total defeat of General Fujiwara, as well as the Prince of Iron.

The Prince of the Flowers, although he did not supplant his father, the emperor, but managed to establish a new segregated domain of the Shogunate: the Sengakuji Reaches, with the military support of a large number of mercenary clans led by Fusion.

Timeline

3300. The decay of the Shogunate

During the first decade of the 3300’s, the Shogunate was suffering a stagnation in which the Emperor seemed too weak to react and lead to a renovation.

The causes of the decline were diverse, a bad management of Alpha Corp, the only one Manufacturer of the Shogunate, that led them to a significant drop in Market Share and the volume of their business. Also the cumulative loss of numerous small disputes with the Hegemony, as well as an increase of the banditry in the Shogunate borders created a growing sensation of Defeatism that was gradually taking over the ruling elite.

Gen. Fujiwara
In the midst of this bad situation for the Shogunate, a new shadow was besetting the imperial family: Dr. Gorax, whose threat had never been definitively defeated in the past and who only waited for his hour to carry out his evil plans of Destruction prior to its subsequent campaign of conquest, had new plans for the Shogunate.

He developed an invisible pest with which to infect immense amounts of bioptics with two effects, the first being that these infected bioptics developed exuberant growth, greatly benefiting their plans in spreading the pest; The second, it was the plague itself, who would use these bioptics for neural connections with mechs, would suffer severe mood swings, with bouts of depression or more frequently wrath. The manipulations of Gorax had a great erspecific gravity by stirring the spirits in the Shogunate and apparently, causing the fall of General Fujiwara as well as of the Prince of Iron.

Winter 3306. The Rogue General and the Princes
Prince of Iron

One of the most prominent officers of the Shogunate Army, the General Fujiwara, considering that the Meiji Emperor has fallen in his duty as Supreme Leader becoming unable to bring the needed renovation to the Shogunate, attempts a coup against the Imperial Throne. The emperor's sons, Prince of Iron and Kiyomasa, Prince of Flowers exploited the situation of chaos to take their own separated sides and fight the rebel General on their own while trying to establish themselves as the legit successors.

3307. While the imperial troops led by the generals who remained loyal to the weakened emperor tried to counter the rebel forces of General Fujiwara, the imperial princes diverted the efforts of the imperial armies that led in a different direction; Both intended to become the successor of the emperor, and for this reason they fought on the battlefield.
Kiyomasa, Prince of Flowers

Both offered all kinds of promises to the mercenary clans, who would line up between both sides, faced by the dispute between the two brothers. Almost every single mercenary clan took sides in this war.

The mercenary clans that joined the Prince of Flowers' Army, with Fusion in the forefront, fought against those joining the Prince of Iron's Army, led by PhoenixStorm. The war was fierce, but finally the victory dropped on the side of Fusion and the remnant clans who followed the side of Kiyomasa, Prince of Flowers.

The Prince of Iron left the Shogunate saving his life, but condemned to eternal exile.

The birth of Sengakuji Reaches
Blossom Flag of Sengakuji Reaches (By GJ)
When the Mercenary Clans took sides, the army fighting with the Prince Kiyomasa constituted the stronger army and led by the Fusion Clan overwhelmed the rebel troops of General Fujiwara as to the henchmen of the Prince of Iron. The victory of the Prince of Flowers allowed him to successfully emancipate a wide sector of the Shogunate from the Imperial control, becoming an independent domain under his personal control: The Sengakuji Reaches, within its own growing mecha industry, developed by the Cherry Blossom Mechworks Corporation.

The seeds of War
Sample of plagued bioptics

What no one discovered until the end of the civil war, and when the facts couldn't be undone, was the existence of the Gorax's dark will that had been responsible for sowing the tares in the heart of the Shogunate, causing, through immense amounts of infected bioptics, a rage wave that alienated the General Jujiwara, as to the Princes among many others, and leading to the subsequent civil war.

Gorax, the mad scientist whose eagerness to possess a portion of the galaxy led him to destabilize and weaken the Shogunate, winning with the conflict time enough to prepare his own assault a year later in an attempt to materialize his megalomaniac dreams of destruction and domination.

[Legendary Pilot]

Pilot license number: 705335

Sheila Retherford, a woman among a family of fierce and skilled pilots and proud member of the Zeon Clan, is an Amazon of few words, and clear thoughts.

She doesn’t like to go into deep and complex reflections or plans, but to strike first to sink your Mecha into a stasis field of freeze and slowness while her firepower burns all your systems to the status of a barbecued roast Snavurm.

Known among her crew as “Big Mama”, she is also recognized by the veterans to be one of the Legendary Pilots of our galaxy, who became famous by the superb performance that she reached at the command of a squad of overwhelming Ammonites.

In her words:
“I'm just a Big mama who loves to blow things up. I'm a Rum drinkin' Grandma of six who loves drivin' in my Mecha”.

Mechanomicon - We have the honour and pleasure to meet a legendary woman pilot and proud member of the also legendary mercenary clan, Zeon, where she is known as "Big Mama".

Greetings Mistress Sheila Retherford.

Sheila Retherford – Hello, Big mama here.

M - Is not so frequent to find a woman among the rude Mecha pilots in this galaxy full of perils and dangers... How did you start as one of the rare Mecha warriors?

S.R. - My husband started himself as a Mecha pilot and I began to get familiarized with everything concerning the Mechas and found I loved them as well; then happened that I could successfully connect to the Mechas' AI to pilot them"

M - Amazing indeed. Only one among one thousand persons are allowed to get the needed neural link with a battle mechanized unit, then, among those few warriors, there are Valkyries and Amazons able either to pilot the titans of war...  What do you think about that outlaw clan known as the Valkyries?

S.R. – The Valkyries are female as I am. What can I say but, "You go girl."

M. - Do you recall your first time piloting a Mecha?

S.R. - Yes, I do. I started with the Red Ant and Warhorse. I had no idea at the time what I was doing.

M - The Red Ant was the very first combat Mecha in the history, build by the Radix tribe from a miner extraction unit. This is a proper start for a mecha pilot indeed.
Where in the galaxy are you from, Big Mama?

S.R. – I am from Terra Prime, from California, a state in the United States in the continental area of North America.

M - I find many pilots have their origins in Old Terra; maybe their genetic pattern is stronger?

S.R. - Of the one's I know of, I would have to agree.

M - I heard once a vintage digital recorded song from the Beach Boys... I enjoyed that and made me remember the beaches of Tau Cauri or those in Rizpah, the Legionnaires' holidays verdant planet...
How a Californian woman happened to join the Zeon?

S.R. - Oh yes, The Beach boys. Good music to listen to as I sit in my Mecha fighting the good fight. Truth to be told I started out with the clan Heroes. A Clan friend now retired, was being recruited by Zeon and asked if my Husband and I could join too. Pleased to say they saw something in me and let me join.

M - How were your days among the Heroes gang?

S.R. - I enjoyed the clan, but I outgrew them. I'm still friends with many of them.

M - During the CW XVII, the Rise of the Specialists, you continued as a member of Heroes, a clan that achieved a gold medal... Do you recall that tournament? And what was so different between this one and the older Clan Wars?

S.R. - Yes, I remember. I believe it was our first Gold. The Specialist sure threw a wrench in the tournaments. You now have to have many builds and mechas at your call.

M - Your first gold among the Heroes clan, but the year before you already got gold with heroes II. 3285 Gold in Heroes II, 3286 Gold in Heroes, 3288 Silver with heroes.

Then, in 3289 a Faction Wars event happened and you joined the Smurf Legion. How this? Were Heroes merging with them by the ongoing time?

S.R. - When I was with Heroes there was no Heroes ll. We did join with the Smurf Legion as I remember a few times.

M - In 3290 you conquered the gold in a Triple Rainbow KotM as also you were acquiring Circuit Fights gold on a regular basis. Were these events what granted you a seat among your current fellows of Zeon?

S.R. - I would have to say it didn't hurt me. I'm sure when they looked they could see I could hold my own. A fellow clan mate was recruited and asked Zeon to consider for myself and my husband. We all got the invite. I was very happy to be with such a well formed clan and felt I needed to build my pilot skills and squad stronger as I was at the bottom at the time.

M - What actions did you follow in order to guarantee your rise in power?

S.R. – I worked on stronger mecha and equipment. Weapons are the last thing for me.

M - On a Mecha, which are your favourite capabilities?

S.R. - I think I would have to say freeze and burn.

M - A chose quite deadly in conjunction. So might I make the assumption your favourite Mecha classes are the Boreas and Notos?

S.R. – I don’t like just them. As a crystal the Magnus can be good with the right build and the Ignis can be strong as well.

M - But the problem with crystal Mecha is that they can't carry as wide weaponry arsenal as a niode Mecha, not to mention the superior capabilities that an elite Mecha can perform. Do you disagree?

S.R. - Shielding can make a difference.

M - Well, you use a deadly frontline of Boreas, so we could assume you appreciate them.

S.R. – Yes, and they carry a lot of fire weapons. I also love the freeze of the Boreas.

M - Talking about destructive capabilities. What could you tell me about the favourite tactic of Zeon, the so called "Colony Drop"?

S.R. - If I told you I would have to kill you (laughs).

M - I am used to avoid death situations. Give us at least some approach that gave a slight idea for the scholars coming through your entry, Big Mama? We can avoid the confidential details.

S.R. - We all just build as strong as we can and share our tactics and ideas. We are like a family and we always do our best to Drop everything we have and then some.

M - Since 3290 you have been a part of Zeon. along the time, which one has been your best enemy in the Mecha Games and Tournaments among all the opponent clans?

S.R. - As all know, Fusion is at the top clan and the one to try to beat.

M - In the past Zeon got some silver medals in tournaments in which you participated, don't you recall any Nemesis of past times for your crew?

S.R. - Cyber Storm. Yes. The AFF would change things up and try.

M - Well, a quick analysis shows Isle of Misfit Toys way above the power of Death’s Collectors, the top AFF clan. Don't feel isle of Misfit Toys closer to stand as an opponent for Zeon?

S.R. - AFF would try. Zeon I think has beat isle of Misfit Toys. Zeon right now is the number two. We can beat all others.

M. - What values have you earned as a mecha pilot woman? How did this harsh life contribute to make the Big Mama you are now?

S.R. – I am my own value: I am the only woman in the clan and am the big Mama.

M - Who gave you that pseudonym and why, if I may ask?

S.R. - I love the vintage karaoke and I so often sing "When you’re good to mama" from the movie Chicago. That is where the name came from.

M - What advice would you give to the future pilot generations?

S.R. - Have fun!

M - From all the real menaces that stalk our galaxy, which one has been the most dangerous in your opinion?

S.R. - The Evil Santa!!! As I remember that one was tough.

M - Thought and he still an undefeated threat to the galaxy! I suspect we will hear more about him the next Xmas days...

Fine enough. Thank you very much for this chance to interview you and good luck in the battlefield milady.

Harrison's Folly

[History]

The last folly of Harlan "Half-baked" harrison was caused after his discovery of the Chroniode fruitlessly sought by Evil Santa. Harrison created his own company: ChronoPower Incorporated, enlisting the all-powerful Fusion clan in his project, which showed great interest as soon as they learned of Harrison's discovery.

Driven by his enthusiasm and his usual lack of common sense, he conducted a series of experiments of manipulation of the continuous space-time without taking the necessary precautionary measures and the necessary time that this study might require.

During a demonstration for the Mercenary Affiliation faction (AFF), he created a portal of dimensions never before seen in the centre of one of the AFF HQ bases; but was unable to interrupt it. The portal communicated with the dimension of Unification, which, alerted to the possibility of an sudden attack from our own forces, happened to the counteroffensive.

Despite the created portal was not stable enough to allow transport, Unification used the minor unstable gates made by the Raven in his tries to comunicate with the many clans, to launch a massive attack, in the thought they were targeting a single target, but ending instead clashing with all the whole Clans of the Galaxy.

Although the invasion was controlled and the entire Unification Army was either retracted or withdrawn to its full extent, the incident was serious enough to warrant a more severe sentence. The fact that ChronoPower Inc. developed both a powerful module with which to improve the Nakshi class and that it was quickly distributed among all the clans, as well as its help of developing an improved PSD, as well as probably the intercession of Fusion and its multiple interests , Avoided the fatal destiny of summary execution. Instead, the powers and representatives of the clans created a monitoring committee that filtered and kept closely controlled the work of ChronoPower, for the benefit of all.

Chroniode Research Oversight Committee

[Technology]

In 3319 Harlan Harrison and his newly created company ChronoPower Inc. caused a major incident when he opened the largest known gateway within an AFF base that later failed to close and which led to the third Unification attack against our galaxy.

As ChronoPower Inc. immediately  collaborated in the attempt to shut down the gate and, thanks to the advanced module, to improve the class Nakshi mecha that they produced and quickly distributed, on time and free of charge, to all mercenary clans and government armies in their fight against Unification. Harrison managed to avoid by a narrow margin the dismantling of his company, the seizure of the Chroniode and end up with his own bones in a maximum security prison in some distant corner of the galaxy.

Instead, he was given a second chance.

In order to avoid a new incident, the Chroniode Research Oversight Committee supervisory organization was created consisting of scientists and representatives of the Governments of all the Major and Minor Powers, as well as with the Officers of several mercenary clans. This entity was imposed on ChronoPower Inc as a supervisory filter of its activities and experiments, ensuring that maximum safety measures are taken and minimizing the chances of a new disaster occurring.

However, many analysts remain sceptical about the usefulness of this Committee, since the field of experimentation with the Chroniode everything is unknown terrain. In fact, they think that the Committee has as a function to ensure that the Chroniode remains "neutral" and under the watchful eye of all the powers of the Galaxy.

Galactic Senate

[History, Society]

Circa 3200. Creation

The Galactic Senate was created as a result of a meeting between several prominent and influential mercenary clan leaders in the late 3200’s. They saw that there was a need for an organization to advocate for the Mercenary Clans, so they decided to forge an independent analytical and advisory committee to voice the will of the mecha pilots of the Galaxy.

Initially, their founders were the commanders of CyberStorm, MurderBots, Affiliation (AFF), the Northwind Highlanders, and RND, representing a broad spectrum of mecha pilots. However, the composition was later opened to both clan leaders and veteran pilots of renown. The Senators obtained the support of General Nova as well as the mysterious Craftsmen, and in turn, served as an advisory group in matters related to the King of the Mountain Tournaments and other mecha sporting events.

In their first years, the Galactic Senate worked alongside not only the Craftsmen, but also the representatives of the Galactic Major Powers: the Society of Cogwerk Planets, the Illyrian Hegemony, and the Shogunate. The Major Powers frequently consulted the Senate on matters that had to do with the Mercenary Clans. The Senate became accustomed to being involved with every significant event in the Galaxy after about a decade of consistent influence.

The Galactic Senate made themselves a progressive asset in global galactic politics, aided by the top mecha pilots of their age. In their back pocket they kept the power of the majority of the mercenary clan forces, which constituted an unstoppable power. They had a wide influence, not only in the sporting tournaments managed by General Nova and the Craftsmen, but also in Galactic Security matters.

Circa 3290. The shadow of a Galactic Menace

The Major Powers slowly started to fear the growing influence of the Galactic Senate once it became clear how much power they wielded. There were signs that the Senate could eventually become another major galactic power. This would have clearly threatened the Society of Cogwerk Planets, the Illyrian Hegemony, and the Shogunate, and so independent groups in all three governing bodies started to formulate a plan to preserve the current power structure of the galaxy. None of the three Major Powers were interested in giving up their control over their territories, so before the Senators could increase their influence further, the Major Powers decided to sabotage the Senate.

Representatives from each of the three powers took action. The Galactic Major Powers each independently pressed the Craftsmen to scale back communication and support for the Senate and let the potential new galactic power fall from their position of influence. The Major Powers wanted the Senate to remain, but they would rather see it be in a form that was easier for them to exert influence over when they thought it would benefit them.

Circa 3290 - 3295. The Decay

The Craftsmen considered the requests of the representatives from the Major Powers and were slowly persuaded to reign in the Senate. Although some senators understood the kind of power they had reached, a lack of unity among the Senators accelerated the disintegration of the Senate and, over time, fewer and fewer Senators attended meetings

During the decaying years, the senatorial meetings often fell into tedious and bitter disputes in which the senators made their colleagues pay for their frustrations as they failed to get the answers they expected from the Major Powers.

The Mercenary Clan and Faction leaders found themselves needing to spend an increasing amount of of their time managing their clans, so they made less requests and coordinated with the other leaders on fewer issues.

Officially, the Galactic Senate has not been abolished, but their council has decayed to the point that you will rarely find a Senator walking the Senate halls.

Vestiges of the past

The last vestige of the Galactic Senate, aside from their isolated and forgotten senatorial palace and facilities, is the galactic lottery. Created to support and encourage the development of mecha pilots, it regularly selects a winner and awards that lucky pilot and everyone in their clan to claim free niodes to helps them to improve their mecha. The winnings are donated by the mecha manufacturers of the Major Powers as a way to keep the clans satisfied with their place in the galactic power structure.
