Galactic Senate

[History, Society]

Circa 3200. Creation

The Galactic Senate was created as a result of a meeting between several prominent and influential mercenary clan leaders in the late 3200’s. They saw that there was a need for an organization to advocate for the Mercenary Clans, so they decided to forge an independent analytical and advisory committee to voice the will of the mecha pilots of the Galaxy.

Initially, their founders were the commanders of CyberStorm, MurderBots, Affiliation (AFF), the Northwind Highlanders, and RND, representing a broad spectrum of mecha pilots. However, the composition was later opened to both clan leaders and veteran pilots of renown. The Senators obtained the support of General Nova as well as the mysterious Craftsmen, and in turn, served as an advisory group in matters related to the King of the Mountain Tournaments and other mecha sporting events.

In their first years, the Galactic Senate worked alongside not only the Craftsmen, but also the representatives of the Galactic Major Powers: the Society of Cogwerk Planets, the Illyrian Hegemony, and the Shogunate. The Major Powers frequently consulted the Senate on matters that had to do with the Mercenary Clans. The Senate became accustomed to being involved with every significant event in the Galaxy after about a decade of consistent influence.

The Galactic Senate made themselves a progressive asset in global galactic politics, aided by the top mecha pilots of their age. In their back pocket they kept the power of the majority of the mercenary clan forces, which constituted an unstoppable power. They had a wide influence, not only in the sporting tournaments managed by General Nova and the Craftsmen, but also in Galactic Security matters.

Circa 3290. The shadow of a Galactic Menace

The Major Powers slowly started to fear the growing influence of the Galactic Senate once it became clear how much power they wielded. There were signs that the Senate could eventually become another major galactic power. This would have clearly threatened the Society of Cogwerk Planets, the Illyrian Hegemony, and the Shogunate, and so independent groups in all three governing bodies started to formulate a plan to preserve the current power structure of the galaxy. None of the three Major Powers were interested in giving up their control over their territories, so before the Senators could increase their influence further, the Major Powers decided to sabotage the Senate.

Representatives from each of the three powers took action. The Galactic Major Powers each independently pressed the Craftsmen to scale back communication and support for the Senate and let the potential new galactic power fall from their position of influence. The Major Powers wanted the Senate to remain, but they would rather see it be in a form that was easier for them to exert influence over when they thought it would benefit them.

Circa 3290 - 3295. The Decay

The Craftsmen considered the requests of the representatives from the Major Powers and were slowly persuaded to reign in the Senate. Although some senators understood the kind of power they had reached, a lack of unity among the Senators accelerated the disintegration of the Senate and, over time, fewer and fewer Senators attended meetings

During the decaying years, the senatorial meetings often fell into tedious and bitter disputes in which the senators made their colleagues pay for their frustrations as they failed to get the answers they expected from the Major Powers.

The Mercenary Clan and Faction leaders found themselves needing to spend an increasing amount of of their time managing their clans, so they made less requests and coordinated with the other leaders on fewer issues.

Officially, the Galactic Senate has not been abolished, but their council has decayed to the point that you will rarely find a Senator walking the Senate halls.

Vestiges of the past

The last vestige of the Galactic Senate, aside from their isolated and forgotten senatorial palace and facilities, is the galactic lottery. Created to support and encourage the development of mecha pilots, it regularly selects a winner and awards that lucky pilot and everyone in their clan to claim free niodes to helps them to improve their mecha. The winnings are donated by the mecha manufacturers of the Major Powers as a way to keep the clans satisfied with their place in the galactic power structure.
